Many popular CBD products are full-spectrum formulated, which means the full profile of hemp plant compounds, terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids are included in the final product. This, of course, includes a small amount of the cannabinoid THC. Even though the legal threshold for the inclusion of THC in full-spectrum CBD products is <0.3% (dry weight), which is not enough to induce psychoactive effects, THC is still present to a small degree and thus being ingested by consumers. This may be concerning for consumers who are required to undergo employment drug testing, which includes testing for the presence of THC.
What factors cause a positive test?
It is technically possible to test positive for THC, even from full-spectrum CBD less than 0.3% THC. Whether someone tests positive depends on how many THC metabolites are in the blood or urine, which varies depending on a number of factors, such as how much full-spectrum CBD is consumed daily, how one’s body metabolizes it, how much exercise the person gets, and even how much water the person drinks.
Which type of THC is detected and for how long?
Employment drug tests are not THC specific. They test for THC metabolites in the blood or urine, which means that regardless of what type of THC is ingested, delta 9 (from marijuana) or delta 8 (from hemp), a person could test THC positive. (A blood test is less commonly done because THC is removed quite quickly from the blood; however, while only being detectable in plasma for up to five hours after consumption, THC metabolites may be evident in the blood for up to seven days.) Urine testing, the more common of the two tests, can detect THC metabolites for up to approximately 15 days. To be safe, it’s a good idea to abstain from full-spectrum products for several weeks prior to testing.
Why do CBD products contain THC?
Those who are in the know often prefer full-spectrum hemp products which include all the natural plant compounds including CBD, CBN, THC, and other cannabinoids. full-spectrum products encourage the “entourage effect.” The entourage effect is the theory that suggests ingesting the hemp plant’s full chemical profile provides a synergistic effect of the unique benefits each natural compound brings to the product. Are any CBD products THC-free?
Yes! For those consumers who are concerned about drug testing, there is a solution. Unlike CBD full-spectrum products, CBD broad-spectrum and isolate formulations do not contain THC and are safe to ingest without risking a positive THC test. How can companies ensure consumers trust their products?
Aside from providing peace of mind through the option of broad-spectrum and isolate products, your company can ensure you receive consumers’ trust by opting to include a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for all your products. Because GPG has its hemp crop tested by a third-party lab, not once or twice, but throughout the entire growing season, we guarantee a Certificate of Analysis for all our finished products that lists our compliance within the legal <0.3% limit of THC and includes a complete profile of what is in each formulated batch and what is not, like residual pesticides, heavy metals, or other contaminants. For more information about what’s included in a Certificate of Analysis, read How Important is the Certificate of Analysis (COA) When Buying CBD Products. Some CBD companies claim to contain less THC than they actually do, and this puts unwitting consumers at risk. It’s your company’s reputation on the line, and proving each product’s authenticity with a Certificate of Analysis provided by a third-party lab test made available to consumers is imperative to showing confidence in your product’s purity and potency.
Whichever formulation you choose, full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate, each delivers the efficacy, potency, and benefit of CBD in unique ways. Choosing which products best meet the needs of your business while incorporating honesty and transparency into your brand will earn consumer trust and maintain their loyalty.
